Alumnus of the Month

Hello,

AIESEC Ohio State plans to use this blog to update you on the current local committee news, and introducing our former members. Local committee updates will be uploaded once a month on the 1st of every months. This is the very first blog post of the "Alumnus of the Month", which will be uploaded every 15th of the month, introducing a former AIESEC Ohio State alumnus. Our first post features Ms. Deborah Hornberger, an alumnus from 1969:

Deborah Hornberger
Class of 1969
The Ohio State University
The Max M. Fisher College of Business
BSBA, Marketing

Ms. Hornberger is currently the President of Hornberger & Associates, a consulting firm specializing in financial services marketing located in San Francisco, California.  The firm helps financial services firms acquire and retain affluent, emerging-wealth and small business banking clients. She has a wide range of experience in the financial services and non-profits sector from serving on the board of many non-profit organizations.

Why AIESEC?

Ms. Hornberger heard about AIESEC when a member of the chapter presented AIESEC Ohio State in her international business class. She became interested immediately because of the professional experience that the organization offered. She attended the information session that Friday and the application was due two days after.

AIESEC Ohio State at the time:

AIESEC Ohio State had just been formed for a year when Ms. Hornberger joined, but the chapter was already working with major companies in Columbus such as Huntington Bank and Lazarus. The Dean and Assistant Dean at the business school were very supportive of the chapter, and they sponsored the students to attend conferences as well.
Ms. Hornberger also mentions that they were very close with AIESEC Michigan at the time because the Regional Director was from Michigan.

National Conferences:

Ms. Hornberger attended national conferences in Boston and Florida. It was a very exciting experience because they had obtained full member status, and were eligible to vote for the Member Committee President (MCP) of AIESEC United States. At the conference, she also had the opportunity to become friends with students from other local committees (LCs) and to learn from each other’s experience.

Traineeship in France:

During her time at AIESEC Ohio State, six to seven students had the opportunity to intern abroad. It was the first time anyone had gone abroad, and Ms.  Hornberger had the opportunity to go to Marseilles, France as a marketing intern. She was able to gain experience in five different departments, which has helped her tremendously.
During her time in France, she had a German roommate who spoke fluent English and French. They traveled together and had activities every weekend. She was also planning on meeting with a friend from Vietnam for vacation. However, her friend could not come into France due to the Vietnam War at the time. Thus she decided to travel by herself, which was a very brave decision. Certainly she did not tell her parents until after the trip. While traveling, she had the opportunity to meet many  other students along the way and   ended up having three wonderful weeks.

Benefits from Joining AIESEC Ohio State:

Ms. Hornberger gained tremendous benefits from being a member of AIESEC Ohio State. Not only did she get to go abroad, she was also able to network with the Dean and the Assistant Dean at the time, which helped her in finding her job in San Francisco, where she currently resides. Moreover, experiences in business development and interacting with business professionals in AIESEC had helped her become more relaxed and confident during meetings and  job interviews.
